this map shows the amount of light blocked by jupiter as seen from earth. (you can find a similar animation at the nasa website). the path of the planet can be seen, as well as details of the cloud pattern known as the great red spot. in january 2007, tess detected a transit of jupiter, the first of many to come. this one lasted less than 2 hours. the planet blocked about 1% of the stellar light. but, because the transit lasted so brief, the scientists were able to see the planet and its moons, io and ganymede, in the stars light.
an important factor in determining whether an exoplanet is potentially habitable is its age. the more of a planets lifetime it has spent as a rocky world like earth, the more likely it is to be habitable because it will have more time to develop life-supporting atmospheric and ocean environments. so this is where most earth-like planet-hunting programs go first: detecting exoplanets in the habitable zones of stars. the so-called goldilocks zone, sometimes called the habitable zone, is just the right distance to allow for liquid water on a planets surface. this zone lies somewhere between the stars habitable zonewhich is the area where a planet could sustain liquid waterand the stars habitable zone, which is the area where a planet could have an atmosphere in which life can exist.
